The hospital waiting room was quiet on Sunday: There was no crowd of relatives, no flood of patients. Israel’s air defenses had just fended off a large-scale Iranian attack, with only one serious casualty recorded. While Israel suffered little in the way of significant damage overnight, this one family was dealt a devastating blow. Amina al-Hasoni, 7, was clinging to life — the sole serious casualty of the Iranian barrage. And were it not for systemic inequities in Israel, her relatives said, maybe she too could have been spared.

A Red Cross convoy carrying Israeli and foreign hostages heads to Egypt from the Gaza Strip on Sunday. Eighty-four-year-old Alma Avraham, who was among the Israeli hostages freed from Gaza on Sunday, has been admitted to the intensive care unit, Israel’s Soroka Medical Center said. But Israel also says it remains committed to crushing Hamas' military capabilities and ending its 16-year rule over Gaza. SITRIYA, Israel (AP) — Rarely do rabbis spend the Sabbath counting bodies. But on Saturday, a week after Hamas militants blew easily past Israel’s fortified security fence and gunned down hundreds of Israelis — at music festivals, in their homes, in cars while trying to flee — Israel’s military rabbinate made an exception. At Shura military base in central Israel, bodies have been coming in faster than the rabbis can identify them. “Generally, Jewish law says that you cannot break the Sabbath for a dead person,” said Rabbi Israel Weiss, who is helping lead the operation. Nearly two decades later, the militant group is still in power in Gaza, and the rabbinate was again at work on the Sabbath.

A 27-year-old Israeli paramedic was working in a hospital when Hamas attacked on Saturday. He said the hospital looked like a scene out of a World War II movie. "People were dying like flies," Yan Gorjaltsan told Insider. Gorjaltsan described the hospital as a scene out of a World War II movie — nurses and doctors frantically taking care of patients while others scream for help. "Even though we always have our differences, when something like this starts, everybody just stops talking and starts working," Gorjaltsan told Insider.
